Bucket List Itch, Scratched

For my 28th birthday this year I wanted to give myself an atypical celebration. It was a bucket list (and still is) item of mine to travel out west, live off the grid, hike, and take bomb ass photos (I tried).

We flew into Phoenix and from there drove to the Grand Canyon.  Our plan was to spend the entire day at the Grand Canyon and experience the sunset. From about 0730 until 1830 we hiked around and into the canyon–14 miles total. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect as it was mid 60s, sunny, and not overcrowded with tourists (November is an off-season).

The following day we made our way toward Page, Arizona, where we would take the Lower Antelope Slot Canyon tour. This was unique in the fact that this particular canyon is on Navajo territory. For that, no persons are allowed to freely explore the canyon–they must sign up for a guided tour. This canyon was fascinating. You take this extremely steep staircase down 110 feet into the canyon. There, you’re presented with all the intricacies that heavy rainfall and flash flooding can produce–flowing ripples of rock. During the summer months, when the sun is highest in the sky, several beams of light will radiate down into the canyon. The sun beams are what draw most tourists and photographers to this attraction.

10 minutes down the road was Horseshoe Bend. We hiked 3/4 of mile there and were in shock once again.
