This was the girls’ trip I never knew I needed!
I met up with 4 other strangers (now friends) to embark on this celebration for our friend’s 30th birthday. Fortunately, I knew my roommate whom I met once at a brunch in DC a couple of years ago! But, the other women were equally as awesome. I don’t know how, but all of our personalities connected and balanced each other out. There was no drama. Just six, black professional and educated queens vacationing together.
We headed to Riviera Maya, a tourism and resort town south of Cancún. We stayed at Único 20°N 87°W–an adults only (mostly) all inclusive resort. The Único experience was regal. I felt very bourgeois and undeserving of such a vacation. Room service was 24-hours (at no additional cost; food wasn’t that great though), there was an in-room fully stocked minibar (that they replenished daily), poolside and beachside service (all the alcohol and tacos you could consume), a local host assigned to every guest to assist with accommodations (such as excursions) around the hotel and a bunch more.
Before this, I had never considered a vacation in this way. When I travel outside of the country, which isn’t often, I like to hit the ground running. I like to be apart of the culture, interact with the locals, and sightsee the major attractions. I normally need a vacation after this type of trip to recoup.
I’d say the activity highlights for me on this trip was the aromatherapy massage I chose on our “spa” day, the excursion that included rappelling from a 60 foot platform, ziplining, being “chauffeured” (that’s a long, but very short story) around a cenote, and sitting in the hydro spa tub facing the ocean.
But honestly, I simply enjoyed the new and fresh company of goal oriented women. It is harder to establish genuine relationships at this stage of life and just to know it is possible is refreshing and encouraging.
