I’m normally not so quick to post, but I cannot not tell y’all about the Flower Fields.
This past Friday, a friend of mine was in LA visiting. We wanted to get together and do something that neither of us had done here. We contemplated the beach, hitting up a new restaurant, or potentially going to a Lakers’ game.
A few days before this though, I was scrolling through IG when I saw a picture of an old co-worker of mine in this flower garden. I have always wanted to visit and peruse amongst a field of giant sunflowers.
I thought this place might be the closest I could get.
When I saw the location of the Flower Fields, I knew I’d visit eventually. I shared the idea with my friend and ‘eventually’ happened on this past Friday.
We left LA late morning-ish and traveled 2.5 hours south (add 1 hour to every road trip out here because, traffic). At some point, we’re driving along the coast and the weather is just too amazing to not stop. I pull off at some random exit and drive 5 minutes straight toward the ocean’s direction.
Our dead-end: San Clemente Beach. We’re here for no more than 10 minutes just taking it all in. There’s no one else here for real except some local families and a shirtless man covering his moobs. It’s 70 degrees, the sun is beaming accompanied by the slightest breeze.
Back on the road and we get to the town of Carlsbad, CA.
We pull up (hop out) and man has plotted 50 acres of giant tecolote flowers behind a shopping duplex in North San Diego County. Not what we were expecting.
The flowers are only in bloom for approximately 6 to 8 weeks each year (March-May). There are 13 different solid colors (which you can’t tell just by looking at them) and some multicolored. They have stations set up in front of the different colored rows of flowers for people to take pictures. It is prohibited (lol) to be among them for various reasons and they have people going around making sure that everyone is respectful of their rules (lol). Additionally, they give wagon rides (for an extra $5 to the $16 you pay to get in..TUH!), have an ice cream stand, and a treat stand dedicated to everything strawberry.
It’s quite the place to walk around, get some fresh air, and be unapologetically childish for a couple of hours (if you’re like me). There’s an awesome history behind it which can be read at http://www.theflowerfields.com/visitor-information/
