Procrastination & Overthinking

Procrastination and overthinking might be responsible for some of our stagnancy. Whether we are attempting to create newer, healthier habits or we are creating a more productive routine, procrastination tends to disrupt our progress in those areas. This applies to overthinking as well. The longer we rehearse past decisions, actions, and reactions, the less quickly we are able to move forward to focus on the present decision, action, and reaction. So, here are my tips:

Don’t put off for tomorrow what can be done today (or Why do it later when you can do it now?).

There is nothing more frustrating than a growing to-do list that could easily be trimmed down, but is somehow always made to be tomorrow’s problem. If the task is small and you think, “I can knock that out in 5 minutes!”, then knock it out in 5 minutes. Try not to allow the simplicity of the task, your tiredness, and your busyness impede your productivity.

Overthinking: You can’t undo what’s already been done.

We can rehearse in our minds ways in which we could’ve responded and reacted to something that has already taken place. This can be quite unproductive, however, as we cannot go back in time and do it over or say it over. We can only learn from the situation in hopes that when we are presented with a similar scenario in the future (these things typically repeat themselves) we will know how to proceed. Overthinking causes us to speculate on potential ridiculous outcomes. Overthinking also hinders us (sometimes cripples us) from moving forward. Do not allow overthinking to interfere with your progress. Sure, whatever you may have said or did was embarrassing in that moment, but let it go. The moment is passed and the witnessing audience didn’t even notice or has already forgotten. They aren’t dwelling on it, nor should you.

Procrastination and overthinking are qualities that can be absolved if you just practice. If you make the conscientious effort to acknowledge when it happens and identify techniques to help you overcome these behaviors you might find yourself with more peace of mind.
