Add Big Sur to your bucket list, no questions asked.
The drive along the coast is unlike any experience I’ve had. It’s like driving along the edge of the world.
The beauty in the windy road with the water crashing against the mountainside is remarkable.
On a bright and sunny day when there is not a cloud in the sky do you get to admire the vibrant blues and and green of the terrain.
You’re left no choice but to fully immerse yourself into its beauty as there is no cell service for a 30 mile stretch.
It was an eerie feeling to be up before sunrise driving along the coast (for the second time) completely by myself. There was not another car or being in sight.
So, make a trip of it. I stayed 1 night in Carmel-by-the-Sea–a cute and quaint small town just north of Big Sur. I reserved a room at an Air BnB where the host had several recommendations for things to do and places to eat nearby. It was the perfect place to come back to after a long day driving and exploring the area.
I know some of us (like me) make this big deal of traveling internationally, but there is so much to see (so much beauty) right here in our own country.
Long weekend? Take a road trip. Fly out West, rent a car, and hit up 2 or 3 locations. Hike, explore, eat something new, and just enjoy the open road.
If you have more time, like a long vacation for example, start in San Diego and make your way up to San Francisco or even toward the Pacific Northwest! There’s plenty (almost too much) to see and do along the way.
Be mindful that there are some highway closures currently due to the damage done by recent heavy rainfall, flooding, and mudslides, but most all places remain accessible.
